The Choral Scholars of St Martin-in-the-Fields
Tom Williams -
Conductor

The Choral Scholars of St Martin-in-the-Fields perform a concert of sacred favourites, both ancient and modern, with Allegri’s haunting Miserere mei Deus at the heart of the programme. The piece, full of mystery and intrigue, is probably the most famed piece of music of the sixteenth century. It’s repeated top Cs and use of faux bourdon chant make it both a challenge to perform and a delight to listen to. It’s modern day companion, Sir James MacMillan’s setting of the same text, gives many nods to its ancient successor but takes the listener on a thrilling journey of MacMillan’s unique sound world. The concert also features Byrd’s Mass for Four Voices, a personal, prayerful and deeply moving setting of the mass ordinary written at the height of the 16th century's Protestant-Catholic struggles.

The Choral Scholars have an essential musical role at St Martin-in-the- Fields. Each year ten scholars – many of whom are music college students or graduates – are appointed to sing midweek choral services during term time. They also gain concert experience through our lunchtime and evening concert series, and benefit from an extensive programme of training in different aspects of church and choral music.
