Thaxted Festival: Opening Concert

  • Thaxted Parish Church Thaxted, Essex, CM6 2PH UK (map)

Join Bob Porter (Conductor), Stephen Bryant (Violin) and the Brandenburg Sinfonia as they open this year's Thaxted Festival.

  • Grieg - Holberg Suite
  • Mendelssohn - Violin Concerto
  • Beethoven - Symphony No.3 'Eroica'

Grieg’s charming, neoclassical set of dances opens this year’s Thaxted Festival. Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto, his last major work, is unashamedly romantic but highly popular since its first performance in 1845. Beethoven’s Eroica Symphony has often been seen as starting the Romantic era in music; it is twice as long as the typical Mozart or Haydn symphony and its emotional charge, especially in the funeral march of the second movement, is greater and more explicit.

The Brandenburg Sinfonia is resident orchestra of the Festival, conducted as always by Artistic Director, Bob Porter. Stephen Bryant is the leader of the BBC Symphony Orchestra. Thaxted’s beautiful and atmospheric Church is a stunning setting for orchestral concerts. Those who arrive in Thaxted early may hear members of the orchestra playing informally in small groups in one of the local pubs, in Clarance House, or at the doors of the Church!

Tickets are £25, £19, £15 and £13 (concessions), available directly from the Festival. Do please check their website for availability.
