Written in 1999, The Armed Man is a remarkable work, which contrasts settings of the mass with a variety of world texts concerned with war – including Kipling's Hymn Before Action, the Moslem Call to Prayer, and the work's eponymous root: a fifteenth century french tune, L'Homme Armé.
